Do this in order.

Do not try to solve everything at once. Start with immediate safety, then move forward one step at a time.

01

Focus on immediate safety

Move away from the person or situation creating the danger if you can do so without increasing the risk. Do not delay leaving in order to collect possessions.

02

Reach a safer place

A trusted person, police station, staffed public place or other location where you are not isolated may be safer than remaining alone with someone you fear.

03

Get emergency help when needed

Call 999 if there is immediate danger, violence, threats of serious harm or someone is preventing you from leaving safely.

04

Tell one safe person clearly

Use plain language such as: “I do not feel safe at home and I need help finding somewhere safe.”

05

Protect your destination

If the risk comes from a partner, ex-partner or family member, do not share your new location with them if that could put you at risk.

06

Use specialist and housing routes

Use the current GOV.UK domestic-abuse support page and, if you have nowhere safe to stay, contact your local council or housing authority about homelessness help.

If safely accessible

Avoid making the situation harder

Do not.

  • Do not confront an abusive person just to prove a point or collect evidence.
  • Do not delay a safe exit for belongings.
  • Do not tell an unsafe person where you are going if secrecy is important to your safety.
  • Do not rely on the disguise or exit controls as a way of deleting browser history or device activity.
